West Flanders, in the west of Belgium and bordered by the English Channel, is the country's only coastal province. Part of its land was reclaimed from the sea. The landscape is flat, with an average elevation below the sea level and less than 100 meters at the highest. The region has a mild and humid oceanic cliamate under the influence of the North Sea. West Flanders has a developed economy and convenient transportation as a hub of connections to European countries since ancient times. Its main industries include agriculture, fishing, construction, industry, trade, banking, transportation, and services.
