Gaborone is the capital city of Botswana and the political, economic, cultural, commercial and financial center of the country. It is located on the southeastern border of Botswana, on the highlands of the upper Limpopo River, only 18 km from the border with South Africa. It used to be a desolate jungle and urban construction began in 1964. The city was named after Gaborone, a revered chief of the Tlokwa tribe and national hero leading the struggle against South African colonialists.

Gaborone is the seat of many institutions of higher learning such as the University of Botswana and Botswana Agricultural University, as well as international and sub-regional organizations such as the United Nations Population Fund, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community. On December 26, 2019, it ranked No. 394 on the list of the Top 500 Global Cities of 2019.

Zhejiang and Gaborone established friendly relations in March 2009.
