  • Universal Education

    Zhejiang is the one of the first regions in China to offer 15-year universal education from 3-year preschool to high school covering more than 99% of eligible children. In 2019, 7.9452 million students attended primary and secondary schools (including junior middle schools, ordinary high schools, secondary vocational schools) in Zhejiang. Children of migrant workers and those with disabilities have access to compulsory education and basic education in Zhejiang. Zhejiang tops the list in China in terms of many major basic education indexes.

    Vocational Education

    In 2019, 702,100 students attended 323 secondary vocational schools in Zhejiang, among which 42 are national model schools. Besides, there are 50 higher independent vocational colleges, among which 6 are certified as national high-level higher vocational colleges and 9 with national high-level disciplines, with altogether 438,500 students in 2019.

    Higher Education

    Zhejiang attaches strategic importance to higher education as a driving force to build up strength and is home to 109 colleges and universities. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China's first modern universities and ranks among the top in the country. In 2019, the number of full-time students at Zhejaing University stood at 55,200, among which 10,400 were PhD students. China Academy of Art is a national art institution with complete academic programs.

    International Cooperation

    Zhejiang is actively embracing the world in developing its education with robust international educational cooperation. In 2019, 41,300 international students from 178 countries were studying at universities and 4,700 at primary and secondary schools. Besides, over 4,000 foreign experts and teachers were working at schools and universities in Zhejiang. Zhejiang sent more than 25,000 university students for short or long-term international exchange programs. About 26,000 students chose to study abroad at their own expense in 2019. The province has 167 Sino-foreign joint programs and institutions, with University of Nottingham Ningbo being the first independent Sino-foreign university in China. 3,100 pairs of sister school relations have been established between primary and secondary schools in Zhejiang and their counterparts in various countries.
