Its coastline runs 6,100 kilometers, the third longest in the country, and is dotted with 2,165 islands, accounting for 65% of the country's total, three quarters of which are uninhabited. With Muan County as the capital, the province is composed of 5 cities, 17 counties and 297 administrative regions, covering a land area of 12,343 square kilometers, and an ocean area of 26,450 square kilometers, 12.3% and 37.3% respectively of the country's total. The province’s topography is featured with two thirds of mountains and one third of plains, high in the east and north and low in the west and south. The plains in the west serve as the production base of grain and rice for the whole country. The Yeongsan river and Seomjin river run across the province.

Jeollanam-do is predominantly an agricultural province given its natural conditions. Its main industries include steel, petrochemicals, coal and gold mining, hydraulic power, textile, oil refining, chemistry, fertilizer, etc. It is home to a number of industrial plants owned and operated by Kwangyang Iron, Yeochun, Daebul, Samho Heavy Industries and so on.

Jeollanam-do boasts a beautiful natural landscape and profound cultural heritage along the southwest coast. It is a treasure trove of Korean folk culture and is the birthplace of Pansori, a genre of narrative song of Korea. Its tourism attractions include five national parks, beautiful bays, white beaches, and over 2,000 islands.

Jeollanam cuisine is recognized as the best in South Korea for the perfect fusion of the natural resources from its mountains, plains and ocean.

Kim Yung-Rok, the incumbent Governor, was first elected in July 2018.

Zhejiang and Jeollanam-do established friendly relationship in 1998.
