    Fukui Prefecture is located in the northwest of central Japan, central Honshu Island, and the north coast of the Sea of Japan. It is an important gateway to the coast of the Sea of Japan. The north-south coastline runs as long as 412 kilometers, covered by weathered rocks, coastal hills and dunes, as well as national parks. The prefecture is a prominent natural treasure trove with mountains on the north and west. Three fourths of its land area is covered by forests. Fukui is the capital city of the prefecture. Daffodil and pine tree are the prefecture flower and tree. It has a typical rainy, snowy and humid climate influenced by the Sea of Japan with four distinct seasons. 

    Fukui Prefecture has a well-developed agriculture. Fukui is famous throughout Japan for the Kashmiri rice. Its long coastline fosters the growth of fishery and aquaculture. Echizen crab is the most well-known seafood produced in Fukui. 

    Known as the "kingdom of fiber", Fukui is one of the top producers of chemical fibers such as pure white silk and nylon in Japan. The chemical fiber products and fashion industry in the prefecture are also quite developed, with over 3,800 companies in textile and garment industry centering on synthetic fibers, accounting for about 40% of Japan's total industrial output. Electrical machinery and appliance manufacturing, which produces mainly electrical components, machine tools and fiber machinery, is the second largest industry, accounting for 19.3% of the prefecture's total industrial output. The city of Sabae is famous for the production of optical frames accounting for 97% of the total in Japan. Fukui prefecture is also one of the world's top five harp producers. Other industries include the manufacturing of surfactant, synthetic detergents, PVC, sulfuric acid and precision instruments. 

    Fukui has the longest life expectancies in Japan for both males and females. The prefecture is well-developed economically and culturally. It also offers many scenic and historic sites, such as Tojinbo, one of the three wonders of rock columns in the world, the spectacular natural landscapes in Echizen-Matsushima, the famous Awara Hot Springs, and the Kehi Pine Grove, one of the top three pine groves in Japan. 

    Tatsuji Sugimoto is the incumbent Governor of Fukui first elected in April 2019.
