    Banten province is the westernmost part of the Java Island in Indonesia, bounded by the Sunda Strait to the west, across which lies the province of Lampung in southern Sumatra.The capital city is Serang. It encompasses three cities and four districts. Banten was formerly a district of West Java Province and became a province after regional autonomy was enforced in Indonesia in January 2001. Bantenese, Sundanese and Javanese are the main ethnic groups in Banten while the majority of its population are Muslims. 

    Banten is the closest province to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, and has a relatively developed economy. Northern Banten is the industrial area, home to Indonesia's largest steel plant, Krakatau Steel is located and industrial zones in Tanggerang district. Central Banten is the urban area while southern Banten is for agriculture, gardening, poultry and mining. The western part of Banten is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indonesia with numerous islands and beaches along the Sunda Strait. Pelabuhan Merak is both the main port connecting the islands of Java and an area for fishery. Banten borders the province of West Java to the east and is responsible for the operation of the airport in the capital city of Jakarta. 

    Zhejiang and Banten established friendly exchange relations in 2010.
