    Thua Thien-Hue is a province located in central Vietnam, sharing borders with Quang Tri province to the north, Da Nang city to the south, Truong Son mountain to the west with Laos, and with a coastline of more than 120 km to the east. The province has an area of 5,009 square kilometers, 70% of which is covered by mountainous and forests and a population of about 1 million, accounting for 1.5% of the total territory and 1.0% of the total population of the country.  

    Thua Thien-Hue has a sound ecological environment, rich natural resources, and is well-known for its charming beaches of Thuan An, Lang Co and Canh Duong. The province has the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia, stretching 70 kilometers and covering 22,000 hectares. Famous ecological reserves include the bird sanctuary in O Lau estuary area and the Bach Ma (White Horse) National Park with more than 2,000 species of plants and one third of all bird and wildlife species in Asia. The province is rich in marine and various metallic mineral resources such as granite, kaolin, lime, silicate, mineral water and so on. The province is the national center of education, training and scientific research. The history of Hue University can be traced back to the Imperial College about 180 years ago. Rebuilt in 1957, it has become a multi-discipline university that offers human resource training and cultivates versatile talents for the province. Quoc Hoc, the oldest high school in Vietnam founded over a century ago, is where many prominent Vietnamese revolutionary leaders have studied, including former President Ho Chi Minh, Prime Minister Pham Van Dong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, etc. 

    The economy and social undertakings of the province are developing rapidly, with an annual economic growth rate around 9%. The province is one of the four major economic development zones in central Vietnam in the national development plan, which will tap the potential of its strength in culture, education, health, tourism and natural resources and facilitate economic growth and international exchange. 

    Zhejiang and Thua Thien-Hue established friendly exchange relations in 1999.
